We are at one with you in deploring the possibility of postponement and hope that the result of the proposed meeting with the Treasury may be that we shall not have to go to the Committee of Imperial Defence and say that a financial deadlock has been reached. I fear, however, that we shall be able to hold out no hope of any considerable sum being forthcoming from Air Votes this year.

We are rather surprised to hear that you regard the entry on to the land as a definite commit- ment to proceed with purchase. The Naval Commander- in-Chief has previously used the ground for Fleet Air Arm purposes and we did not regard its use for the present emergency as committing us to purchase, although we recognised that there might be a question of rental if purchase is not proceeded with.

As regards the time for the meeting, Fass, Fraser and Stocks of the Treasury are all on leave, but I think Fass returns next week, and if one day next week would suit you any date and time would suit

me.

Yours sincerely,

Oh Cainis
